About the Campaign

Selfie With Daughter Campaign Update: April 11, 2026, Bibipur Village, Jind, Haryana, India

Who We Are: The Global Selfie With Daughter Campaign

The Selfie With Daughter Campaign is a global grassroots movement born from the heart of rural India — a simple yet powerful idea that a photograph can change the world. Founded in 2015 by Sunil Jaglan, a village sarpanch from Bibipur, Jind district, Haryana, we started with one selfie and a dream: that every daughter deserves to be celebrated.

What began as a local initiative to combat female foeticide and gender discrimination has grown into an international movement spanning more than 80 countries, with over 2 million selfies shared by families across the globe.

Our Story of 1 Simple Idea

Selfie With Daughter Campaign

In June 2015, Sunil Jaglan took a selfie with his two daughters and posted it on Facebook with the hashtag #SelfieWithDaughter. His village of Bibipur had a child sex ratio of just 832 girls per 1,000 boys — a reflection of the deep-rooted son preference that plagued not just Haryana, but much of India.

Within days, hundreds of families joined in. Within weeks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the Selfie With Daughter Campaign on his national radio programme, Mann Ki Baat, calling it "a silent revolution." In 2017, President Pranab Mukherjee launched our official mobile app at Rashtrapati Bhavan — and the movement truly went global.

Our Mission for the Selfie With Daughter Campaign

We exist to:

  • Eliminate female foeticide by changing hearts and minds through positive storytelling
  • Celebrate daughters and challenge cultural norms that devalue the girl child
  • Promote girls' education and economic empowerment
  • Build gender-equal communities where every daughter is welcomed, loved, and given the opportunity to thrive

What We've Achieved through 8+ Years of Work

  • 📸 Over 2 million selfies uploaded from families in 80+ countries.
  • 🌍 Active campaigns and volunteers across India, Nepal, the United States, Canada, Australia, and beyond.
  • 🏛️ The world's first Selfie With Daughter Online Museum, launched in 2016.
  • 📱 A dedicated mobile app launched by the President of India in 2017.
  • 🗳️ Annual themed campaigns — from celebrating single mothers to first-time female voters and differently-abled girls.
  • 🪧 17,000 nameplates in Bibipur village replaced to proudly carry daughters' names.

Our Values: 4 Pillars of the Movement

Pride — Every daughter deserves to be celebrated openly and joyfully.
Inclusion — Our movement welcomes families from every background, culture, and country.
Action — We believe awareness must lead to real, lasting change in communities.
Empowerment — We champion girls' rights to education, health, safety, and opportunity.
